The medieval war club was simply a length of ash wood, made thinner in the handle area and widening out into the striking area, very much like a modern baseball bat.
Pictures of such weapons usually show them to be studded with rows of nail-heads or spikes.
The war club, being a cheaper weapon, was mostly used by common infantry soldiers, although men-at-arms would certainly have used them, especially when fighting on foot.
Some may have been short enough to be swung in one hand, but most were probably used as two-handed weapons.
