Who were they?

Below the rank of knight were the pages, squires and sergeants. Among their number were the sons of nobility - knights who were learning their trade.

In addition, there were servants and boys, who assisted the cavalrymen, tending to their horses and maintaining their armour in good condition.

At Bannockburn

A number of squires lost their lives defending their knight masters on the battlefield. After De Bohun’s fatal clash with Bruce on 23 June, his squire was killed as he stood defending his master’s body.

Numerous other squires were killed either fighting or drowning in the Bannock Burn as they tried to escape. Others survived but were captured, and had to pay huge ransom fees to regain their freedom.
